Picture books are perfect, mini-models of effective writing! With their sterling language and succinct stories, picture books serve as excellent examples of how literary elements work in narrative writing. Dozens of lessons show how to use them to teach mood, voice, character traits, theme, and other devices. Kids are eager to apply what they've discovered to their own writing, and the results are amazing. Includes lessons from all stages of the writing process for both fiction and memoir writing plus lists of recommended books. For use with Grades 4-8.

I homeschool and I was having a hard time finding a creative writing curriculum I liked (as opposed to analytic writing). This flexible text allows me to teach creative writing to children between the fifth and eighth grades and covers a broad range of styles. Although children at this age are definitely well beyond the comprehension range of picture books, their writing is actually at the same level. By using well structured, well written books and not just any picture books, the children are able to see models of technique in writing which they then can duplicate in their own writing. I had borrowed this book from someone else and I went looking for my own copy. It is a critical part of my writing curriculum now.

I used this book as a reference to help my students write better. Many, if not most people are visual learners and when they can explain and then write about their interpretation of what they see, a story may unfold that is quite awesome. Therefore, a picture may definitely be worth a thousand words. Thank you!

I LOVE this book! I teach middle school students in special education and will be using this as one of my 3 main guides next year for writing! I love that a book list is provided for each element of writing (this saves you so much time!) and that a model lesson is provided (dialogue back and forth between teacher and students). Highly recommend!!!

This book is an excellent resource for teachers who wish to provide writing models for their students using quality literature. I feel it surpasses Raplh Fletcher's Craft books as it provides outlined, easy-to-use lessons for each book or aspect of writing. It is a welcome addition to my professional library.
